Growing up, Sundays were for Bollywood movies. Most of you don’t know but I grew up in a pretty big household. My cousin’s lived with my family for most of my childhood. Their family of 7, plus my family 4 and our grandparents made a total of 12 people in our house! Entertaining that many people can be hard and expensive so movies were our choice of fun!
Every Sunday my parents would load us up into a van and take us to Swadhayay (like a Hindu Sunday school) and on our way back we’d stop at Bharat Video in Passaic to pick up a Bollywood movie. We would literally book it to the video store (it was a popular stop post-Sunday school for a lot of families) praying that they hadn’t run out of copies of the latest Shah Rukh Khan movie!
Our go-to snack was curry leaf and turmeric popcorn. Popcorn was always considered a healthy snack in my household. It has fiber, and is a whole grain!
My mom would take the biggest pot we have in the house and pop some popcorn over the stove top. She’d then add a vaghar, a mixture of spices fried in oil to it, and toss. My movie theater popcorn was yellow with turmeric, not butter. It was salty, spicy and slightly sweet! We’d gather up in our tiny living room, spread out some blankets and munch on some popcorn throughout the 3 to 4-hour long movie (yes, Bollywood movies are super long!) Popcorn was a part of our weekly ritual.
Rhut and I decided to keep the tradition going in our household! We go out and rent DVDs of children’s movies from our local library with our daughter every Sunday and sit down with a big bowl of turmeric and curry leaf popcorn. It’s a healthy snack that we don’t mind if Elara goes overboard with it. I even pack it in her lunch box sometimes!
Next time you have a movie night and are thinking about reaching for a bag of chips, try making some popcorn at home! To learn more about the myths and facts about popcorn check out: https://www.popcorn.org/Nutrition/7-Myths-About-Popcorn

Description
Spice up your popcorn with turmeric and curry leaf to make this salty, sweet, and spicy popcorn! Super quick and easy!
Ingredients
Instructions
Stove Top Popcorn
- Add olive oil to a heavy bottom pot and heat over medium heat. Add 2-3 popcorn kernels to the pot and cover. Once the popcorn kernels pop, turn down the heat and add the rest of the kernels to the pot and cover. After 1 minute, turn the heat up to medium-high. Shimmy the pot every few seconds to evenly cook the popcorn. Once the popping slows down a bit, remove from the stove and let it sit for 30 seconds. Pour into your serving bowl.
Curry Leaf and Turmeric Seasoning
- In a small pot add the vegetable oil over medium heat. Heat the oil for 1 minute and then add fennel seeds and curry leaves. Be careful when adding the curry leaves as the oil will sputter. Saute for 30 seconds or until the sputtering stops. Remove from the heat and add the turmeric and red chili powder to the oil and mix well. Pour the oil and fried curry leaves over the popcorn and mix well. Add sugar and season with salt to taste and toss once more before serving.
Notes
Feel free to use a bag of plain microwave popcorn to shorten the cook time! Microwave popcorn is a delicious, healthy and safe snack, however, the Popcorn Board never recommends using a brown paper bag to make microwave popcorn since they are not made for use in the microwave.
