What Is a Cherry Simple Syrup?

This cherry simple syrup recipe creates a concentrated, sweetened syrup made from cherries and sugar. I like to add almond extract to my cherry simple syrup to give it that maraschino cherry-like flavor. However, you can also skip it for a pure cherry flavor!

Why Make Your Own Cherry Simple Syrup?

  • Customizable Flavor – Adjust the tartness, sweetness, and add unique spices or herbs to really make this syrup yours!
  • Versatile Use – Perfect for drinks, desserts, breakfasts, and even savory dishes!
  • Easy to Make – Requires just a handful of ingredients-cherries, sugar, and water.

Ways to Use a Cherry Simple Syrup Recipe

One of the best things about a cherry simple syrup recipe is its versatility. Here are some creative ways to incorporate it into your treats and dishes:

1. Drinks

  • Coffee & Tea – Add a splash to iced lattes, cold brew, or even hot tea for a fruity twist. I added this syrup to my Starbucks iced cherry chai dupe recipe in the cold foam!
  • Cocktails & Mocktails – Mix it into cherry-infused cocktails, spritzers, or simple soda water for a refreshing drink. I like to add a tablespoon to lime or lemon sparkling water for a low-sugar Shirley Temple!
  • Lemonade & Smoothies – Elevate homemade lemonade or blend it into fruit smoothies for extra sweetness.

2. Desserts

  • Drizzled Over Ice Cream – A simple yet delicious topping for ice cream sundae!
  • Cakes – Soak cake layers with cherry simple syrup for extra moisture and flavor
  • Yogurt & Parfaits – Swirl it into Greek yogurt or layer it in parfaits for a little sweetness

3. Breakfast & Snacks

  • Pancakes & Waffles – Replace maple syrup with a little cherry syrup for a fruity start to your day. I love this on chocolate chip pancakes!
  • Oatmeal & Cereal – Stir it into warm oatmeal or drizzle over granola for natural sweetness and toss in a handful of berries for a hearty breakfast.

4. Savory Dishes

  • Salad Dressings – Combine with balsamic vinegar and olive oil for a cherry-infused vinaigrette.
  • Glazes for Roasted Vegetables – Toss roasted carrots or Brussels sprouts in a light cherry glaze.

How Easy Is It to Make a Cherry Simple Syrup Recipe?

Making cherry simple syrup couldn’t be simpler! All you need are fresh or frozen cherries, sugar, and water. I recommend using frozen cherries if they aren’t in season so you can get the most cherry flavor out of them! Simmer the ingredients together until the cherries break down and release their juices, add in the almond extract, then strain the mixture for a smooth syrup. In just about 10 minutes, you’ll have a delicious, homemade syrup ready to use.

Variations and Customizations

A cherry simple syrup recipe can be adapted to suit different tastes and dietary preferences:

  • Tart vs. Sweet – Use tart cherries for a more tangy syrup or sweet cherries like Bing cherries for a milder flavor.
  • Herbal Infusions – Add rosemary, basil, or mint for a unique twist.
  • Spiced Cherry Syrup – Infuse with cinnamon, cardamom, or star anise for a warm, spiced profile. Add the spices in with the cherries and then once it’s done simmering, cover and let it steep off heat for 10 minutes before straining.
  • Sugar Alternatives – Swap sugar for honey, agave, or a sugar substitute for a healthier version. Keep in mind that it will change the flavor and texture of your syrup!

Final Thoughts

Cherry simple syrup is a delicious, versatile addition to your kitchen that can brighten up a wide range of dishes and drinks. Whether you’re drizzling it over pancakes, stirring it into cocktails, or using it in dressings, this flavorful syrup is a great staple. Best of all, it’s incredibly easy to make at home with just a few simple ingredients. Try experimenting with different variations to find your favorite way to enjoy it!
